The Effects of Ankle Strengthening Exercise on Balance and Walking Ability to Chronic Stroke Patients

Abstract

|
Objective: This study examined the effect of ankle strengthening exercise on static, dynamic balance and walking ability to chronic stroke patient.
Method: Between June and August 2012, 26 patients who were undergoing physical therapy for chronic stroke in K Hospital Gyunggi Province were divided into two groups of 12 each and applied with a Functional electrical stimulation(FES) and proprioception exercise program and a strength exercise program respectively five times a week for 30 minutes for 8 weeks. Re-assessment has done 8 weeks after the intervention.
Results: In the comparison within each group, both of two groups showed significant differences between before and after the experiment in all the tests(p<.05) and in the comparison between the groups, there were significant differences in the amounts of changes in all the measured items(p<.05).
Conclusion: In this study, ankle strength exercise program with FES and proprioceptive exercise was more effective than FES and ankle proprioceptive exercise program for efficient training to balancing and walking ability of chronic stroke patients.
